ABOUT

ABOUT

Nestled beneath orange sandstone mountains in the Eastern Highlands of the Freestate, lies UNION HOUSE on Bestersvallei Farm.

Union House has a unique history dating back to the South African (Boer) War, where it was the only house to be burnt down twice, once by the Boers and once by the British!

In 1879, President Brand of the Orange Freestate planted two Oak trees on the front lawns to represent unity between the Brits and the Boers, which trees are still standing today.

In 1910, the Union of South Africa was signed under these very Oak trees.

Many of the leading players in this period of South Africa history are represented by portraits hanging in and around Union House, making for a historical walk down memory lane for the history enthusiast.

Today, Union House is a peaceful escape from busy life and a place to come and relax and rejuvenate in the tranquility that the house and the farm offer.
